Horses Rule
Spring break was a blast. The week started with sunny walks in the park and ended with a rainy camping adventure in the smokies. Life is good, but my picture stories class is still all but leisurely. I'm having to cram a farm story into two days of shooting. Let's see how this goes.

Love...
This week our assignment was to do a story on "love." I ended up shooting a couple living in Bowling Green Retirement Village who have been married for sixty one years. Unfortunately they take many spontaneous trips to see their grand kids in Nashville, so the time I spent with them this week was brief. The photos of them in crowns and sashes are from the retirement home's Valentine's day dance where they were crowned king and queen. It had to be the cutest thing I've ever seen.
Coach Mom
This is my first picture story of the semester. Jessica Coulter is a new mom and has coached pee-wee basketball for seven years. I tried to capture her rough side on the court and how it contrasts with her gentle maternal side at home with her daughter.
New Semester, New Stories
Well, here it goes. I'm a little embarrassed to express to cyberspace how much anxiety I have felt toward this new semester. Lighting was fun and easy and full of experimenting. Now that I have approached picture stories, I'm not only facing all of my weakest areas in photography, but also facing the reality that being an actual photojournalist is in the cards at this point. At first I was terrified of this class based on all the horror stories floating around the lab, but two stories into it I feel pretty good. I feel like I'm challenging myself and improving the more I shoot. I'm excited about fixing my weak areas. I guess the best thing to do with fear is embrace it. Or at least try.

Home....

Golden light pours through the windows of my parents outdated kitchen as I scribble what will soon be a five-page research paper on the life of a ciggarette (which I can't even spell). The command keys in Photoshop are causing my fingers to cramp up, and my brain is so tired of bouncing portfolio ideas off itself, I've moved on to daydreaming. Nashville, Tennessee smells of suffocating pollen highlighted by the screaming glow of golden hour. Although I have experienced Daylight Savings twenty times in my life, the sudden darkness around four-thirty is still quite shocking. Home is strange these days. When I'm here it feels like I'm hiding. The movie "Garden State" suddenly makes sense. I guess I'm now searching for a new idea of home; or atleast a place to seem familiar. I'll continue thinking while you continue internet surfing. Enjoy this weekend of thanks :)..

I'm Awake.
If there is one thing I have learned, it's that the only think standing in my way is my own doubt.
I can do this....
Now let's go take some photos :)

Middle Tennessee Horse Trials.....

These eleven-foot ceilings and hardwood floors causes the temperature in my apartment to be even colder that it is outdoors. I would turn on my heat, but this 1950's space heater is a little frightening and I'm not quite ready for my gas bill to rob my pockets of what little money I have.
Despite wearing a parka at all times, life is good. School is going well with the exception of mathematical struggles and Bowling Green is becoming less and less boring each week.
I decided to start a new story over fall break. Kathy Brock is a fun-loving lady from Franklin, TN who has just recently overcame severe brain trauma due to an accident she had while fox-hunting. Both her and her horse, Sultan have exceeded the expectations of their friends and family and competed in the Middle Tennessee Horse Trials this past weekend. I shot the competition and plan on also shooting Kathy's daily struggles since her accident, and how she has fought to continue to do what she loves. This story is difficult to shoot since a large portion of it is in the past tense. If you have any advice as to how to shoot this please let me know.

Fill Flash

This week in lighting we are supposed to be photograhing portraits of athletes using fill flash. I called my ballerina friend, Hannah, who was gracious enough to pose for me while I attempted to figure out how to use the strobes. It was not easy. The first hour or so was of me experimenting with the strobes, trying to light her correctly. It wasn't easy for me at all.
The other subject is Kathy Brock, an equestrian recovering from intense brain trauma due to a foxhunting accident. I'm considering following her through her recovery to her first competition in mid-October. If I execute it correctly, it can be a great story. Shooting portraits with an animal was very difficult, especially since I was having troubles with the sensor on the remote strobes. If anyone is willing to sit with me and teach me how to do this right consistantly, I would be eternally grateful.
comment and critiques (especially lighting tips) are very appreciated.

wes
